Chapter 14

It was after nine a.m. when Lev made it downstairs. He was about to head through to the dining room for coffee when a call from behind stopped him. He turned to see Fifi with her coat on and a bag over her shoulder.

“Hi,” he said, a little confused as to why she was heading out so soon.

“We’re leaving,” she replied, a little uncomfortably.

“We?”

“Me, Tim and the others. We’re returning the rental and there’s a bus that will take us to the airport.”

“Um….”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t think it would be a good idea for you to travel with us. Tim is still kind of….” Her words drifted into nothingness.

“I don’t understand. Did you manage to speak to someone at Occulture?”

“My agent did. He only spoke to a secretary, but her brief was to tell him that the project was on hold until further notice. Apparently, they got all our answer machine messages and had a meeting but didn’t bother to tell us anything.” She shook her head. “I should have known it was all too good to be true.”

“Well, if it’s any consolation, the rooms are paid up until the day after tomorrow. You may as well take advantage of that.”

“Actually, I’ve got something else sorted for a few days at least.”

Fifi looked a little surprised. “Whatever. Hope things work out for you anyway.” It was obvious that she was referring to the news article that broke while they were having a drink together the previous evening, but Lev didn’t really want to get into it.

“Thanks.”

“Take care, Lev.”

“You too.” He watched her head down the hallway and out of the entrance. A crooked smile crept onto his face as he thought about Tim and the others. He wondered how many rumours must already be circulating about him then shrugged it off and headed into the dining room.

He felt the eyes of several guests watching him as he poured himself a coffee. He had no idea how many times that photo had been shown since the previous evening, and he wondered how long it would stay in the news cycle, but for the time being, at least, he had other things on his mind.

Since waking, he had been thinking about the Black house. He had been thinking about the lost time. He didn’t know how long he was going to spend in New Scotland trying to figure out what had happened, but in the absence of work, he didn’t have
